I am grateful and fortunate to be teaching Capoeira, and I do so with a fire inside myself, that the art-form ignited, as if a prayer answered that was sent out form my psyche when I was a child, only to find me again as an adult.
This fire is one of personal transformation. sometimes I wonder if I could have found the same path if I had had access to amazing teachers in another art-form, would that have touched me in the same way?
However, waxing lyrical I may do on its behalf, Capoeira has never professed itself as a vehicle for enlightenment. There are not the promises of an Eastern martial Art, it stands proud as an Art-form none-the-less. One worthy of study, self-sacrifice and emotional swings, in the same way as training any activity that requires daily immersion BUT it's beautiful side as a tool for self-realisation is encountered again and again within the experiences of people taking it up for the first time.
Lets be sober here about the limits of Capoeira, it is obviously not a cure-all for social ills, it is certainly frought with politics, and continues to suffer from torrid personal relationships.We must respect it and liberate it for what it is. It is the heritage-art of malandros, escravos- hustlers and grandchildren of slaves and takes people on journeys either to develop their minds or just their style.
